Infection Prevention & Control

Numerous clinical studies worldwide emphasise the key role hand hygiene plays in infection control and its financial impact on hospitals. Most noteworthy, research indicates that up to half of HAI’s are as a result of poor hand hygiene.

SureWash has delivered increases in hand hygiene compliance rates by as much as 50%

SureWash comprises of three hand hygiene training products; the ELITE, the GO and the APP. Each product results in consistency of the standard of training received, while being available around the clock to suit an organisation’s needs. By gamifying the learning technique, SureWash encourages engagement and interaction in hand hygiene training. Therefore, muscle memory is developed, increasing hand hygiene compliance. As a result, the spread of infection is reduced and patient outcomes are improved.

Features

Reporting suite

In order to automate reporting and to identify user’s level of compliance and participation, SureWash incorporates an RFID badge reader for staff log in. The SureWash Reporting Suite on SureWash.Net allows you to easily track and assess staffs training data. For example, it can highlight the degree of competency staff are demonstrating on a universal / hospital wide or ward level / individual basis. The opportunity to compare data between different wards and different teams of staff is also available. Each Report View can also be exported into PDF or Excel format for printing, archiving, or further processing.

Tailored Content

SureWash kiosks also incorporate a lesson and quiz function which provide instant feedback regarding the standard of knowledge in an organisation.  Lessons are available on PowerPoint presentation to deliver short, sharp bursts of learning to users. Both the quizzes and lessons can be customised and tailored to the organisations requirements to maximize learning and engagement. These functions help you to address the gaps in learning among employees, but to also refresh knowledge at critical times.

Gamification

By incorporating gamification and e-learning techniques (lessons and quizzes) into the training process, healthcare staff are more engaged in the learning. Firstly, it helps to develop muscle memory for life. Secondly, compliance with the five moments is increased as users are more confident and faster using the technique when it is in muscle memory. Thirdly, goals and an associated leader board can be used to drive local contest and challenges which also motivates engagement and enthusiasm during training.

Compliance & Certification

Hand hygiene training records are automatically saved for internal reporting or reporting to external bodies. This is as a result of SureWash products being linked to our online monitoring system. Furthermore, individual PDF certificates of compliance with hand hygiene training can also be generated for users on www.surewash.net with your organisation’s logo.

Secure Data stored in the cloud for ease of access

All of the data is stored securely within the units themselves. However, by signing up to our Cloud solution, you have immediate access at all times to records updated in real time.

Hand hygiene improvement among patients and visitors

Infection control is a shared concern. As a result, the SureWash system can be used to engage patients and family members in a conversation about hand hygiene and infection control issues. Due to the gamifying of the learning experience, patients find the training products and engagement a positive experience. Furthermore, an associated range of signage can be used to engage users in independent learning kiosks.

Technology

Hand Hygiene meets Augmented Reality

To aid the hand hygiene training, SureWash uses a combination of e-learning, gamification and patented gesture recognition technology. The SureWash system is physically present in the hospital 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The gesture recognition technology evaluates the users hand washing technique in a structured series of washing methodologies. As a result, this ensures that hand hygiene is performed according to the WHO hand hygiene technique.

Through repeated hand hygiene training, users quickly progress to the highest standards of hand hygiene management through muscle memory learning. Clinical trials have concluded that the use of gaming technology not only improves technique, but also has a positive impact on compliance with overall hand hygiene. This was measured by monthly audits of ‘5 moments’ using WHO recommended audit tool.

How it works

The live video image is shown to users on a large screen and the image overlaid with real time feedback on their progress (augmented reality). In addition to measuring the motions of the hands in accordance with the WHO protocol, the hand hygiene training products can identify if staff are “bare to the elbow”. This information along with user’s level of progress can be tracked on SureWash.NET to reach hand hygiene proficiency.

SureWash is the only technology scientifically validated to train on the WHO hand hygiene protocol. As part of a multi-modal campaign it has been shown to improve the bacterial load on hands and the “5 moments” compliance (Higgins & Hannan, 2013). Most noteworthy, the WHO hand hygiene protocol has been shown to be more than twice as effective at killing germs in comparison to normal unstructured hand hygiene (GCU paper).

There are multiple examples of people who currently use SureWash to deliver best in class hand hygiene risk management. These testimonials are featured on t the About page.

SureWash uses cutting edge technology and innovative learning approaches to deliver scientifically validated learning outcomes in hand hygiene. The incremental difficulty levels and the “Practice-Rest-Repeat” learning approach used in SureWash delivers optimal learning and retention of good hand hygiene skill.

The traditional “glow box” approach uses gel coverage as a proxy for effectiveness but scientific results show it is actually a poor proxy for microbiological effectiveness as friction is needed (GCU paper). Therefore, the glow box learning approach is not suited to training a psychomotor skill.

SureWash uses advanced sensors and  game elements such as real-time feedback, formative and summative scoring, incremental difficulty levels and micro-learning quizzes to harness people’s competitive streaks. As a result, this structure builds a good-natured competitive atmosphere in hand hygiene and infection control. This helps to encourage engagement and interaction in training.

SureWash provides specialized training that explicitly empowers patients and visitors to train in infection prevention alongside staff. Children in particular love to use SureWash. Empowering patients and visitors with knowledge of Infection Prevention allows them to be active participants in their care. Therefore, they can play their part in reducing the risk of HAIs in hospitals and reduces the risk of infections when they get home.

To support the integration of the SureWash system we provide one day of on-site consulting to train staff on design and implementation of their Hand Hygiene program. For three years post sales, SureWash provides remote system support via the Internet. In addition, SureWash will provide new learning features each year via annual updates of the software.

SureWash is highly customisable to the individual needs of the IPC team or the administration itself. Firstly, the micro-learning quizzes can be written by the IPC team using an online tool at www.surewash.NET. The quiz is designed online and then loaded onto the SureWash units via WIFI or using a special USB key. Results from these custom quizzes are included in the standard SureWash reports. SureWash has a number of ways in which administrators can customise the protocol. The system can optionally enforce “bare to the elbow” by detecting sleeves and large watches. The system can also add an additional step of wrist cleaning which is standard practice in the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. Secondly, the graphics displayed on the system “home screen” can be customised to acknowledge sponsors, etc and to drive engagement via leader-boards and goal targets. Thirdly, SureWash can be further customised to deliver the core learning content in multiple languages. In addition to English, language packs are available in French, Spanish and German. New languages can be developed on request.

Staff have a number of ways to log into SureWash. SureWash can use a hospital’s RFID identity cards to allow staff to log in. Otherwise, staff can use the touch screen keyboard to type a username (e.g. their email address or staff ID number).

SureWash provides comprehensive reports on who has trained, their pass rates, the poses proving difficult, the time of day training has occurred etc. Reports can optionally show a photograph of the hands to verify compliance with nail and jewelry guidelines. The reports can be used for internal reporting for Infection Prevention and Control or Quality Control purposes or to provide data to regulatory bodies such as Joint Commission, CQC, etc. These reports are available in Microsoft Excel format allowing them to be incorporated into other documents and the raw data is available for further analysis or research purposes. As a result, SureWash can provide a summary of the activity level of each system via email to a nominated contact in each hospital.
