The number of people dying worldwide from preventable Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) is comparable to a Boeing 747 aircraft full of passengers crashing every two days according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the USA estimates that 100,000 Americans die each year from infections acquired in hospitals. It also estimates that in America alone treating such HAIs costs $45 billion a year.
Today, out of every 100 patients in acute-care hospitals, seven patients in high-income countries and 15 patients in low and middle income countries will acquire at least one health care-associated infection (HAI) during their hospital stay. On average, 1 in every 10 affected patients will die from their HAI.
Hand hygiene improvement programmes can prevent up to 50% avoidable infections acquired during health care delivery and generate economic savings on average 16 times the cost of implementation.
