Requirements to Achieve the Training and Education Domain

There are three steps required by your facility to achieve The Leapfrog Hand Hygiene Standard, Training and Education Domain.

Step 1: Deliver hand hygiene training to all individuals who touch patients or who touch items that will be used by patients at both the time of onboarding and annually thereafter. Online training modules are acceptable if delivered and/or developed by a professional with appropriate training and skills.

Step 2: As part of the initial hand hygiene training, assess individuals physical demonstration of proper hand hygiene with soap and water and alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Computer-based assessments of an individual’s hand hygiene technique are acceptable if the assessment tracks an individual’s hand motions, is done without providing instructions to the individual during the assessment, and feedback is given to them at the end.

Step 3: Educate individuals on the following infection prevention and control topics during initial and annual hand hygiene training.

  1. Evidence linking hand hygiene and infection prevention.
  2. The 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene.
  3. How to clean your hands with alcohol-based sanitizer / soap and water.
  4. When to use gloves and perform hand hygiene.
  5. The minimum time that should be spent performing hand hygiene with soap & water and alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  6. How hand hygiene compliance is monitored.
