Respiratory illnesses are a primary cause of lost training days among elite athletes.
5,800 days of training were lost to respiratory illness in a two-year period in the UK.
Appropriate hand hygiene measures help athletes achieve marginal gains.
Training Athletes & Coaches
SureWash delivers hand hygiene and infection control training to athletes and coaches. This training is used by healthcare professional around the world to help manage risk and prevent infections. Cleaning your hands frequently and correctly has never been so important and athletes’ health is imperative to their performance. Therefore, quality hand hygiene and infection control training can help elite athletes stay healthy throughout the year.
Reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses
The WHO estimates that 50% of infections could be prevented with better hand hygiene. Respiratory illnesses such as colds and flu’s, norovirus etc. can result in several lost training days for athletes. However, hand hygiene is one of the primary ways to prevent the spread of these infections if done correctly. SureWash is currently used to train athletes as they prepare for the Olympics. Validated Hand Hygiene & Infection Control Training
As hand hygiene is a psychomotor skill, learning is best delivered as short bursts over a period of time. Multiple studies have shown that this “practice-rest-repeat’ method is the most effective way to build muscle memory. For instance, a study conducted at Yale Medical School using the SureWash GO examined the amount of training required to reach proficiency. It found that over a five-day period, users take on average 32 hand hygiene training sessions or a total of 23 minutes’ training to develop the skill. Subsequently, SureWash is focused on delivering training which builds muscle memory and engages professionals in a positive learning experience.
Gamified learning to make training fun, interactive and engaging
As repetition of the technique is critical to learning, gamification is used by SureWash to make hand hygiene training fun and engaging. Hence, SureWash divides hand hygiene learning into a series of levels, each with a challenge. At the beginning there are lots of prompts and plenty of time to complete each of the six poses. However, as the learner moves through the levels, the prompts are reduced and the time gets shorter. In the final step, the learner must repeat the technique from memory and the SureWash unit assesses proficiency. To encourage interaction, athletes can also compete with each other by comparing their hand hygiene score/time.

Training Records
Keep track of athlete’s hand hygiene progress on SureWash.Net, a highly secure cloud-based reporting suite. Once a SureWash unit is connected to WIFI, all training data is available from your desktop. Therefore, it is suitable for both internal and external use and it also enables coordinators to follow up on the training without being with the athlete. In addition, reports can focus down to an individual level, enabling administrators to assess user assessments, pass rate, pose scores and much more. Data can also be automated and aggregated across different training camps. Therefore, this helps to identify who has completed training and if athletes encountered any difficulties.
